Enrolment

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR ADDRESS FALLS WITHIN THE SCHOOL ENROLMENT ZONE – PLEASE CHECK HERE

Procedure for enrolling a new entrant child

Around the time of your child’s 4th birthday please complete the online enrolment form and provide the required documentation for your child. It is vital that we are aware of  any children turning 5 years old so we can prepare our home group numbers. To confirm the enrolment, you will be asked to provide the following documents. Please email these to office@waitakiri.school.nz or bring into the school office.

  • A copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport
  • Your child’s immunisation certificate which shows they are immunised up to the age of 5
  • Proof of residential in zone address – current (in the last 30 days) tenancy agreement or utility account (eg power bill)

The Deputy Principal in charge of the junior school shows prospective parents and children our school on Mondays at 11.00am and Thursdays at 1.45pm each week. If you would like to book a time to do this please contact the school office or email jacqui.malham@waitakiri.school.nz

Prior to your child starting school, you will receive an invitation to attend a mihi whakatau (welcome) to meet the Principal, Deputy Principal, your child’s teacher and other parents and children from the class. You will find out everything that you need to know about starting school at this meeting.

Children are invited to attend three school visits, usually the week leading up to their fifth birthday. You will be given a letter with dates for the visits. A typical visit schedule would be:

Visit 1             8:40 – 11.00am             Bring morning te
Visit 2            8:40 – 12.30pm            Bring morning tea
Visit 3            8:40 – 1:25pm               Bring morning tea and lunch

You may need to provide an updated proof of current  residential address again (within in the last 30 days) at the time of your child’s first day of school.

After 4 – 6 weeks at school, the class teacher will make a time to meet with you for a learning conference, so your child can share their learning goals and talk about their start to school.

Procedure for enrolling a child already at school
For parents who wish to enrol a school aged child already at school who is transferring to Waitākiri School please complete an online enrolment form and email the school at office@waitakiri.school.nz.

Please download and read the following important information before you complete the online enrolment form.

ONLINE ENROLMENT FORM

Out of Zone Enrolments
Waitākiri School has an enrolment (home) zone. At this time, only children living in our home zone are accepted onto the roll. It is a requirement that a child must be living in our home zone from their start date. If a child moves out of the home zone before this they will be asked to enrol at their local school.

We have no out of zone places available for children to attend Waitākiri Primary School for the 2022-2023 year.  In this instance an out of zone ballot will not be held.

Out of Zone Priority Criteria (if a ballot was held)
The Education Amendment Act (No 3) 2010 changed the priority of out of zone students selected via the ballot. The change only affects students not living in school’s home zone.

Applications for out of zone enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

  • First priority must be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in special programme(s) run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education.
  • Second priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
  • Third priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
  • Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.
  • Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.
  • Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary for Education under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulated in the area served by the school.

The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed on the school website and at the school office where copies of the scheme are also available.

For further clarification or any out of zone queries, please contact the school office.
